  • 1.  Seeking Scale for Sense of Belonging Towards Work

    Posted 11-05-2021 21:48
    Hello,

I am looking for a short scale to measure sense of belonging towards work for an online survey. The ones I found are mostly sense of belonging towards an educational institution such as the university. Or they are too long for our purposes, such as 20 items.

If you have any scale ideas, that would be appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Hello Ada,

Does it have to be a belongingness measure?

Have you considered job embeddedness? This measure by Crossley, C.D., Bennett, R.J., Jex, S.M., & Burnfield, J.L. (2007) may be worth considering:
    1. I feel attached to this organization.
    2. It would be difficult for me to leave this organization.
    3. I'm too caught up in this organization to leave.
    4. I feel tied to this organization.
    5. I simply could not leave the organization that I work for.
    6. It would be easy for me to leave this organization. (reverse scored)
    7. I am tightly connected to this organization.

Or perhaps a measure of identity or involvement would work? Alternatively, maybe an ostracism measure would work (e.g., Ferris et al., 2008)?

If you do find a measure, please share with the group.

    Cheers,

    Jeremy

    Hello Jeremy,

Thank you very much for the response and ideas.

Yes, it needs to be a sense of belonging measure. Thank you all who also contacted me directly.

I am looking for a short survey for belonging towards one's employment place. So far the following documents have been most useful to locate such a short scale.

We will probably go with what LaGrant did in their dissertation(first link below), which is a modified version of the general belongingness scale (GBS).

The following article outlines the development of a work group inclusion measure that includes items for two dimensions: belongingness and uniqueness:
