Hi: I am working on a study focusing on the behaviors displayed by individuals when confronted with the lifestyles of opposing groups. It is hypothesized that individuals of the ingroup feel threatened by the lifestyles of the opposing groups and, as a result, feel a variety of negative emotions. To test these hypotheses, I am looking for valid tested multiple item measures of the following constructs:

    1) guilt, here I am looking at emotional state guilt (i.e., feelings of guilt at the moment), not at trait guilt (i.e., guilt-proneness)

    2) dissonance

    3) fear

    4) hostility

    5) prejudice

I am new to this field of study and have a hard time finding scales that seem to work. Any help is greatly appreciated

    Hi Karin,

You can find a good overview on how guilt (state and proneness) has been measured in:

Tangney, JP and Dearing, RL. (2003). Shame and guilt. New York: The Guilford Press.

    I hope that helps.

I work a lot on the feeling of guilt. So, please feel free to shoot me an email if you have any questions. And please also keep me in the loop of your findings.

    Best wishes,

    Fabian

    Karin,

An outstanding resource to consider is:

    Robins, R. W., Noftle, E. E., & Tracy, J. L. (2007). Assessing Self-Conscious Emotions: A Review of Self-Report and Nonverbal Measures. In J. L. Tracy, R. W. Robins & J. P. Tangney (Eds.), The Self-conscious emotions: Theory and Research (pp. 443-467). New York: Guilford Press.

Hi Karin - you might want to look at the measures used in the following article - validated measures there might have some generic enough questions related to some of your topics, particularly prejudice, to be useful, even though the dimension of difference you are measuring is not the same.  The authors have used several existing instruments as well as creating and validating their own.

    Hi Karin,

You may want to consider the Guilt and Shame Proneness scale published in JPSP by Cohen and colleagues:
