This is a very interesting discussion indeed. I think another challenge with motivation construct, apart from theoretical complexities, is measurement. Darla, You make a very good point. However, one doesn't need to go far into the real world to ask these questions. If you remove the extrinsic benefits of the tenure system in academia, a lot of academics will opt out of research or teaching because they have no intrinsic motivation of doing it. My other ...
