    Hello OB colleagues,

    I am looking for a high-quality (i.e. reliable and valid) online Big Five survey to use in my online graduate Leadership course next year. It would be great if the survey calculated student scores and was relatively cheap.

    If you have any suggestions, please e-mail me at Hend7407@stthomas.edu. I'm happy to compile recommendations for everyone later. Thanks!

    Dear Kevin,

    Why not just use the IPIP? ipip.ori.org

    It's free, validated, and you can easily set it up in qualtrics to calculate scale scores and give feedback.

    Perhaps consider the HEXACO instrument, http://hexaco.org

    It expands upon the Big Five (adds an honesty- humility dimension) and is validated and free to use. I've used it with my MBA students.

    Hi Kevin,

    You might want to have a look at the revised Big-Five Inventory (BFI-2; citation below includes items).  It measures the 5 factors, but also 15 facets that may be of particular interest to students.

    Soto, C. J., & John, O. P. (2017). The next Big Five Inventory (BFI-2): Developing and assessing a hierarchical model with 15 facets to enhance bandwidth, fidelity, and predictive power. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology113(1), 117.

    You can use itpmetrics.com. This was developed in my lab and gives free personalized reports on the Big Five factors and facets in 10-12 minutes items presented in Hastings & O'Neill (2009). It's 100% free. There's also teamwork and leadership scales in other assessments there.

    Hi Kevin,

    Three free possibilities that you might want to check out are:
    1. The IPIP-NEO, which is International Personality Item Pool's Representation of the NEO PI-R™ (see http://www.personal.psu.edu/%7Ej5j/IPIP/ for access to two online versions);
    2. The BFI, which is a Big 5 inventory developed by John P. Oliver (information at: https://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~johnlab/bfi.htm and online version at http://www.outofservice.com/bigfive/); and
    3. The Hexaco-PI-R, which is a Big 5+1 inventory that also features a dimension accessing "Honesty-Humility" in addition to the Big 5 dimensions of personality (see http://hexaco.org/ and http://hexaco.org/hexaco-online).

    Here are two free online versions that calculate the scores automatically. These might be useful if only the students (not you) need to see their results.
