Call for PDW Participants: Benefits and Pitfalls of Technology in the Classroom
Organizers: Sumita Raghuram, Jean M. Phillips, Hee Man Park
Saturday August 11, 2018 | 9:45am – 11:45am | Sheraton Grand Chicago in Streeterville
PDW Overview:
The presence of personal technology in the classroom (e.g. smartphones and laptops) can either enable or hinder teaching effectiveness. It can enable teaching to the extent that instructors are able to incorporate technology tools in their teaching (e.g. websites, mobile apps, or online gaming). On the other hand, the very same technology can hinder learning as it can be a source of distraction to the students. In this participant- focused PDW, we will seek inputs from participants in advance of the PDW regarding the activities and strategies they have successfully used to either incorporate technology in teaching HRM topics or to minimize its intrusion in learning and share some of these best practices as well as others during our session. We will compile and present some of these at the beginning of the PDW. Participants will also share or demonstrate some of their best technology strategies in small groups with shared teaching interests during the PDW. All contributions will be put in a Dropbox folder for access by the PDW participants after the session. Our expectation is to have each PDW participant leave the PDW with at least one new idea to enable and manage technology in the classroom.
