Job Title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Medical Education
Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SIUSOM) is seeking individuals committed to medical education research to join our team of leaders in medical education innovation. This postdoctoral fellow position will be in the Department of Medical Education (DME) under the direction of the Chair, Debra Klamen MD, MHPE, also the Senior Associate Dean for Education & Curriculum.
SIUSOM is nationally and internationally recognized for educational innovation and rigorous medical education research. SIUSOM has been a pioneer in curriculum innovation since the 1970s, when Dr. Howard Barrows implemented a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) curriculum here and introduced Standardized Patient assessment. This innovative ethos continues; in 2013, SIUSOM received international awards for excellence in the areas of student assessment, student engagement, and social accountability from the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE). Ongoing innovations include, but not limited to, computer-based deliberate practice in diagnostic reasoning, automated assessment of written diagnostic justifications, medical education as it intersects with action research to improve health, and participatory research with medical students and residents around pathways to and through medical school.
Innovative medical education cannot be achieved without interdisciplinary collaboration and rigorous research using a variety of theoretical perspectives and methods. Therefore, we seek candidates who may not have a background in medicine but who are eager to learn and improve educational practice through out-of-the-box ideas and approaches. The position is a two-year postdoctoral fellowship. The postdoctoral fellow(s) will actively:
· Socialize into medical education.
· Develop and conduct innovative medical education projects.
· Contribute to existing medical education research projects at SIUSOM.
· Present and publish in the field of medical education.
· Build relationships with medical education mentors at SIUSOM.
Minimum Qualification
· Earned PhD or EdD. Candidates with an ABD status may apply, but successful candidates must complete their dissertation at the time of employment.
