    Hi

I just started teaching an MBA class on OB (with an emphasis on Leadership) and was hoping for some suggestions on experiential exercises that have worked well at the MBA level. I have a class that is very diverse, with some students having no work experience, most having 3-10 years, and a couple with 15-25 years work experience. I am looking for something that will work with a wide range of experiences.

I will happily assemble and distribute suggestions.

    Thank you in advance !

The Origami Frog exercise. I believe it is published in the Journal of Management Education (an excellent source for experiential exercise).

    Jeanine,
I have used the salsa making exercise from MTR (1-10) 2017 by Kerri Anne Crowne. The students really enjoy it and I've used it for both grad and undergrad. Good luck and I'd love to see a roll up of other exercises if you get one. Thanks, Deirdre Dixon

    Dear Dr. Andreassi:

I am interested in seeing what ideas you are able to assemble.  Please include me when you distribute your findings.

There might be opinions and research to the contrary, but I have found that a lot of experiential exercises work for a great range of audiences.  I have seen executives struggle with, and gain a lot from, activities that initially seem more appropriate for elementary school aged children.  I have seen elementary age children do quite well at, and learn a lot from, more complex experiential activities that initially seem more appropriate for executives.  In my experience, undergraduates and M.B.A. students have been no different.  One can often change the language describing what they are supposedly doing with the symbolic objects and contents to be more contextual correct for the audience, but use the same underlying concepts and interplay.

There are many options available to buy prepackaged, if you have a budget.  I do not sell, nor am I promoting any of these prepackaged options, but was wondering if you were thinking along those lines?  I know that Babson College used to use some excellent ones as part of its M.B.A. curriculum.

Recently I have been working with a group of students on a Destination Imagination project.  Their website is worth looking at and specifically the "instant challenges".  It may be even more fruitful to just search for "instant challenges" on the web?  I tried just now and this pininterest site seemed an interesting place to perhaps start https://www.pinterest.com/explore/destination-imagination-instant-challenge/?

    Good luck with your research.

    Hi Jeanine,

We just published a paper on an andragogical approach to teaching leadership. We discuss the principles of andragogy (adult learning) as a framework for designing leadership courses and discuss scaling exercises to meet students with varying levels of work and life experience. We also describe specific assignments, including some experiential activities, that can be used within a a leadership course. I have attached the paper here in case it could be of use to you in your current or future course design.

I developed a role-play exercise for transformational leadership. You may find it useful. Attached is the recent publication detailing the exercise and debrief.
