Rewards for Graduate Supervision

    Hi,

I am trying to gather information about the rewards, if any, associated with graduate supervision in business schools (payments, course remission, etc.). If you are willing to share your policy for graduate supervision, this would be very helpful.

    Thank you!

No payment, no course remission.  For me it is something you do because you enjoy acting as a mentor to young keen minds. So, the rewards are personal and intrinsic – not extrinsic

You may also get publications from your students but to be honest, would be more time effective and less frustrating to just do it yourself...

    Hope that helps.  Linda

    Dear Kathleen,

For PhD supervision only, there is course remission in the workload, up to 25% reduction for first supervision (five students max, so five percent remission from taught courses per PhD student).

    Regards,
    Aaron

We have honors students where we receive a pittance but I would prefer to do it for free.

Agreed that the rewards are intrinsic.

We have stipends for supervising masters and honours theses as well as masters research projects (MBA).  For PhD supervision we get a 1 course release for 2 years for 1-3 PhD students who are post comprehensives. For 4 or more post comp PhD students it is a 2 course remission.

My how times have changed. Faculty of my era (say 1970 - 2000) viewed direction of theses and dissertations as central parts of a normal faculty job rather than something requiring special rewards. Very interesting. Ben Schneider

    Hi Kathleen,

At the Kelley School of Business there are no rewards for graduate supervision (other than the intrinsic rewards). However, as someone who does a lot of supervision of doctoral students and is familiar with the time and effort it requires, I am a strong advocate for rewards such as payment or, especially, course remission. Best of luck with your benchmarking!

    Best,

As a part-time faculty supervising a Master's thesis, I do get paid the equivalent of 1 credit per semester. I am not sure about full-timers though. (University of Balamand, Lebanon).

    Wish you all the best,

    Colleagues,

I see that the major rewards are the satisfaction of helping a young researcher and the potential to generate great new ideas or points of view in the interaction with a young mind!

    Thanks,

    Hi

    Greetings from India!

At our institute a PhD student is supposed to form a TAC (Thesis Advisory Committee: consist of a Chair and 2/3 members) who will guide him/ her in the thesis work. We do not have any monetary incentive for being the Chairperson/ member in any TAC.

At my institute, every year a faculty is required to earn points in three broad categories:

    1. Research

    2. Teaching

    3. Administration

For example, a faculty is expected to accumulate X points in the research category, which may be from paper publication/ conference presentations/ case writing/ Book chapter/ being in the TAC of a PhD student. A faculty earns points being the Chair/ member of the TAC, subject to a maximum of n points (n<X).

Hope it helps in your research work.

    Regards,

    Sushanta
