Hello to those teaching team leadership or high performance teams courses:
On our continued quest to help close the science-practice gap (in this case, for team leadership research and practice), Brad Harris and I are delighted to announce the publication of our new book from Stanford University Press entitled: 3D Team Leadership: A New Approach for Complex Teams.
We take an evidence-based, practitioner-oriented approach to helping leaders navigate the messiness of today teams; that is, those teams that are dynamic, complex, agile, and often global and virtual. Using stories, anecdotes, quotes, and visuals, the book is designed for upper-level bachelor's, Master's, and executive education courses.
Importantly, the book also includes a set of assessment tools in the final chapter that can help team leaders gauge their strengths and developmental needs regarding 3D team leadership concepts, which can easily be used for multi-rater feedback programs.
We have made available a complimentary set of PowerPoint slides for teaching each chapter of the book here:
You can find the book itself here:

Here is a table of contents with a short description of each chapter:
1. The Dramatically Changing Landscape of Leading Teams – discusses all of the main differences between yesterday's and today's teams, and how our approach addresses more modern day teaming
2. 3D Team Leadership – introduces the basic concepts behind the 3D team leadership framework, including the three dimensions of teams: the individuals in a team, a team as a whole, and the subteams within an overall team; also demonstrates how 3D team leadership can be used in a shared team leadership environment
3. The First Dimension: The "I's" in Teams – provides detailed, hands-on guidance for how to develop the leader behaviors necessary for leading individuals in modern day team contexts
4. The Second Dimension: A Team as A Whole – provides detailed, hands-on guidance for how to develop the leader behaviors necessary for leading entire teams in modern day team contexts
5. The Third Dimension: Subteams – provides detailed, hands-on guidance for how to develop the leader behaviors necessary for leading multiple subteams within an overall team in modern day team contexts
6. Putting It All Together: Knowing When to Focus on What in Your Team – helps team leaders understand which of the three dimensions (i.e., individuals, teams, subteams) is most important to focus on at any given time; and, also provides a detailed example of using 3D team leadership in an Agile project team environment
7. 3D Team Leadership across Cultures – provides tools for adapting the 3D team leadership approach in different cultures around the world
8. 3D Team Leadership in Virtual Teams – helps leaders apply 3D team leadership approaches in their distance and hybrid teams
9. What It Takes to Be a 3D Team Leader – describes the five core team leader competencies critical for being an excellent 3D team leader and how to develop them if deficient
10. Assessing Your 3D Team Leadership Skills – contains the assessment tools leaders can use to capture their 3D team leadership strengths and developmental needs using multi-rater feedback
We hope you find the book helpful in teaching team leadership and/or high performance teams courses and as a valuable resource that translates the latest scholarly research on teams for practitioner audiences.
