Outside in: How Crosscutting Ties Drive Individual and Unit Performance
Organizer: Ning XuU. at Buffalo, The State U. of New York
Discussant: Martin J. KilduffUCL School of Management
As the complexity of work tasks and uncertainty of organizational environment increases, employees who have social network ties across boundaries of their teams, organizations, or social groups are believed to perform well due to the access to diverse perspectives, nonredundant information, and multiple opportunities. However, a different opinion also exists that diversity from external relations can cause work-related problems, which further interferes with job performance and attitudes. In this symposium, we include five empirical papers that explore how, when and why crosscutting ties or external relations impact performance, at both individual- and unit-levels. After the presentations, Dr. Martin Kilduff, a renowned social network scholar, will serve as the discussant to provide constructive suggestions and lead an interactive group discussion.
