A Network Approach to Understanding the Antecedents and Consequences of Team Leadership
Showcase Symposium ; Sponsor(s): (OB, MOC, CM)
Date: Monday, Aug 7 2017 ; Time: 4:45PM - 6:15PM ; Venue: Hilton Atlanta in Room: Galleria 2
Co-Organizers: Ruchi Sinha & Chad Chiu, U. of South Australia , Adelaide
Discussant: John Mathieu, UConn
Abstract: Leadership in teams is considered an essential determinant of team performance, yet the relational and interactional dynamics of team leadership has received relatively less attention by organizational scholars. In this symposium, we adopt a social network lens to explore the process of team leader emergence; the consequences of different network configurations of informal leadership in teams, and the role of formal leaders in the utilization of network bridging ties to improve team performance. The four papers move beyond traditional aggregation based models of studying team leadership to a more interactional social network perspective of conceptualizing team leadership and understanding its antecedents and consequences. Following the presentations, John Mathieu, a seminal contributor to the literatures on leadership and teams, will lead an interactive group discussion.
