    Hi everyone,

A colleague of mine is putting together a set of fundamental readings on strategy/strategic management for a new Master's-level course and is looking for ideas. I'd appreciate your suggestions for the "must read" articles on this topic.  I'll share the results.

    Hi Sean,

There is a really great book by Henry Mintzberg, Bruce Ahlstrand and Joseph Lampel "Strategy Safari: A Guided Tour through the Wilds of Strategic Management". A lot of the original and key articles/readings for each "school of thought" / approach to strategy are cited in/integrated into each chapter. I've often thought that asking students to use this book as a guide, but then to delve deeply/at a graduate level into each approach by reading original/key articles would be a very fun graduate course.  i.e., Many of the original/key articles often used in MBA or Ph.D. reading packages (plus many others from various perspectives) are highlighted/put into context in this book.

    Best wishes,

    Sheldene

I'd second Sheldene's enthusiasm for Strategy Safari.  I'd add that the book doesn't really address the question of agility- or time-pacing-based strategy, so additional readings would be needed on that-McGrath's The End of Competitive Advantage or Eisenhardt's articles on time pacing would be the obvious places to start.

    Strategy Safari motion, and
I would like to add Sun-Tzu's Art of War!

This small book gives us the most beautiful insight of "Win without Fighting" with five core competitive advantages (Tao; Tian; Di; Zhang; Ba = Way; Sky; Earth; General; Rule).

I would also add the HBR article on "Strategy as Simple rules" by Eisenhardt as one of the most recent framework to strategy.

P.S. It would be nice if you can distribute the list one done!
