  • 1.  Rubric to Grades

    Dear Colleagues,

Hope all is well. I am looking for some guidance/best practices on calculate grades from the rubric. I will be having a term-paper assignment with 5-6 criteria (e.g. Background, Research question, methodology, implications, overall formatting). The grading system we follow is A+, A, A-, B+, B, B- etc..

I am struggling to devise a procedure, whereby, I can somehow quantify each of the criteria (background, method etc) easily to the above grade system. This way I could add up or average out all criteria to get the final grade on the assignment.

I would greatly appreciate if people could explain/share ideas on how to go about this ?

    Thank You.
    Best regards,

    Saud,

It sounds like a behaviorally-anchored rating scale (BARS) might be the answer. This will take some effort and thought on your part, but it will also help your grading and allow students to have a better feel for what your expectations are for the project.

So, for Background, your rating scale might look something like:

A+ (10 points) = paper offers an in-depth background analysis of the problem; clearly defines the problem, the current state of affairs, etc.; explains why the topic is important, what the implications of the problem are for society, etc.; offers key statistics and/or references for assertions, etc. etc. etc.
A (9.5 points) = offers a solid analysis of the problem while defining key terms, etc, etc.
    A- (9 points) = .....
    ...
F (5 points) = poor analysis of the problem; fails to define the problem; offers a random and unsystematic background of the issue; fails to give any statistics and/or citations for the problem

If you did this for all 10 dimensions, all you would need to do is sum up the points and assign grades.

    Cheers,

    Jeremy
