    Posted 04-02-2017 12:59

I have a student in our professional MBA program who has asked for some suggestions for a book on communicating better.  He has several concerns about his communication style.  It's not just about how to communicate clearly, it's also about when to say something, when not to say something, what's appropriate to say--so in layman's terms I think it's emotional intelligence as well as communication.  If you have a suggestion for a good book for improving communication skills, I would appreciate any suggestions.  I'll be happy to compile the list and post it back to the group.

    Thank you!

Communication is never about books; it needs to be internalized by observation and self-propulsion.

    Hi

I'm with Stuti on this.  I've been designing some of this development into our Executive MBA and it's really how people can seek feedback and get feedback to understand how they are communicating and perceived. We're using coaching and structured reflection to support development of communication skills, conflict management, and group dynamics capability. Unfortunately a book won't create behavioural change.

I just used the book Crucial Conversations in my MBA class and think it does a nice job providing meaningful yet practical information on different communication strategies and techniques for a variety of situations.

Here is a website for the book though it can be ordered inexpensively on Amazon.

    Thanks, Kristin Scott

Start with Carnegie and move on from there! It is surprisingly effective in my MBA classes.

Two books that I found very helpful when I was early in my consulting career are still in print:
    • How to Say It by Rosalie Maggio
    • I Wish I'd Said That by Linda McCallister
They're both filled with practical guidance for gracious and professional communication.

    Hi Maureen,

I'd recommend the following one written by the #1 New York Times Best Selling author John Maxwell:

Everyone Communicates, Few Connect: What the Most Effective People Do Differently

I used it for my own research about voice and communication. In this book Maxwell describes many situations where people have to decide what to say and when to say it. So I though it could be a fit.

    Best,

    Lei
