?Managing Up: Is that enough?

    Dear John,

I think a relevant question here is if "managing up" is a sufficient metaphor.
Ultimately, „managing up" implies that the pyramid metaphor of organizations is all we have. But the other two powers you implicitly mention (influence, and reputation) do not follow the bottom-up-top-down logic.
They require a different metaphor, and the understanding of two other kinds of structure, present in every organization.

So my recommendation to you is not to use a "video" demonstrating "managing up", but a resource elaborating on the three structures of organizations, which we call Org Physics.

    Hope this helps!
    Regards,
    Niels

    Dear Netters

I am in the process of developing a lecture on "managing up" for my organizational behavior class. In this class, I'm going to talk about the use of upward influence, political skills, and other behaviors that employees can use to manage their relationship with the manager. For example, some employees will influence their manager to give them autonomy in an effort to get a manager off their back. Others may influence their manager to get access to desirable projects or rewards.  Finally, some may try to manage the situation when their boss is incompetent or abusive.

What I am looking for is a good video or set up videos that can be used to demonstrate the process of managing up. I've looked through episodes of The Office, but haven't found anything good yet. I am wondering if someone could recommend any videos to demonstrate managing up.

    Thanks

    John
