    Dear Netters

I am in the process of developing a lecture on "managing up" for my organizational behavior class. In this class, I'm going to talk about the use of upward influence, political skills, and other behaviors that employees can use to manage their relationship with the manager. For example, some employees will influence their manager to give them autonomy in an effort to get a manager off their back. Others may influence their manager to get access to desirable projects or rewards.  Finally, some may try to manage the situation when their boss is incompetent or abusive.

What I am looking for is a good video or set up videos that can be used to demonstrate the process of managing up. I've looked through episodes of The Office, but haven't found anything good yet. I am wondering if someone could recommend any videos to demonstrate managing up.

    Thanks

    John

    Hi John,

You might want to take a look at the Stanford Leadership in Focus video cases (see https://www.leadershipinfocus.net) and in particular the "Brian Lillie: Managing Up" case (https://www.leadershipinfocus.net/presentations/175/play/). Here is a description:

Case Challenge: Facing tight deadlines and a difficult project, a manager must deal with an overbearing boss who is hampering progress.

Leadership Decision and Result: VP confronts his executive sponsor and both come to an agreement specifying each other's role in the project.

    Teaching Objectives:
    • Leadership credibility
    • Understanding how clear roles impact team morale and productivity
    • Necessity for a cordial confrontation in a difficult situation

    Teaching Themes:
    • Difficult conversation
    • Taking charge

    Good luck!

Working Girl (starring Melanie Griffith), Devil Wears Prada (Anne Hathaway) are the first two that come to mind.

I use Band of Brothers – "The Breaking Point" episode.   I use it for "leading in the middle", but that includes leading up.

I have used Gung Ho with Michael Keaton (1986) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gung_Ho_(film)

It has managing upward as well as cross cultural dealings (US/Japanese), male vs female management/relationships. In other words, it covers a lot.

    Kind regards,
