The increased use of experiments in public administration and management research offers much promise for advancing theory, methods, and substantive knowledge. However, scholars often need to think carefully about, and get feedback on, the designs of their experiments before implementing them. Yet few public administration and management scholars have opportunities to seek this kind of pre-implementation advice and feedback from colleagues on their experimental designs. The presentation and discussion of designs requires specific facilitation, in part because they do not contain the results of the experiment and require relatively more focus on proposed methods including experimental treatments. Traditionally, public management conferences are not set up to facilitate such discussion.
With this pre-conference workshop, therefore, we seek to provide an opportunity by inviting public administration and management scholars to present and review each other's experimental research designs before they are implemented. The format of the workshop will include short and concise presentations of planned experimental research designs (10 minutes per design), with substantial time for questions and feedback from the audience (20 minutes per design). We aim to circulate a short research design note from each presenter prior to the workshop to facilitate the discussion. By participating, each participant will sign-up to a code-of-conduct that (s)he will honour individual research ideas that are presented during the workshop and not replicate other's experimental designs until they are published.
The workshop will be free of charge.
In order to present your experimental design at the workshop submit a 100 words abstract to sebastian.jilke@rutgers.edu before March 15. Accepted submission will be notified soon after.
Full research design notes are required to be circulated 1 week before the conference.
