    Posted 09-17-2016 08:00
    Hello,

I teach a change management course and would like to plan an experiential activity to compliment a lecture on change process and Kotter’s model. I could also use a case as long as the case is free. I would appreciate any suggestions.

    Thanks,
    Serena

    Hello Serena,

You may wish to refer the book "An experiential approach to OD" by Brown and Harvey. It has a lot of interesting and useful activities on the subject.
    Best wishes for your course.

    Hi Serena,

You could refer to the book titled "Organization Development: Accelerating Learning and Transformation", which is an edited volume by Ramnarayan & Rao. It has several short cases as examples for the concepts put together by multiple authors.

    Hi Serena,

I've had solid success with the Change Game from Lewis and Grosser (2012) in the Journal of Management Education. I've used it both with undergraduates and graduates. It does an excellent job of conveying the difficulty of overcoming resistance to change, which makes students very amenable to the advice from Kotter's model.

    Hi Serena,

I second Kevin's recommendation of the Change Game. I have used it with both undergraduate and MBA students, and it has worked well.

Here are some other options that I use in my MBA Org Change course:

    Hi Serena

It's probably not what you're looking for exactly, but when I teach change I try to get students to reflect on the huge number of organizational change models there are based on stages (like Kotter's) and the extent to which they are likely to be empirically supported and the extent to which they are useful well-validated prescriptive models that can be used to guide change interventions in organizations.

This is useful review that in fact suggests that in general the evidence for change interventions is so weak that it's pretty difficult to be confident that any of these prescriptions are useful:

Barends, E., Janssen, B., ten Have, W., & ten Have, S. (2013). Effects of change interventions: What kind of evidence do we really have?. The Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, 0021886312473152.

  • 7.  Writing Assessments for Masters Students?

    Posted 09-20-2016 11:13

    ***Apologies for Cross-Posting***

    Hello, Colleagues,

My school is considering adding a writing assessment for students entering our masters programs.  The assessment would be administered after new students arrive on campus, probably during orientation.  The purpose would be to identify those students whose writing skills need improvement for masters level competency.

I'd appreciate any advice about your experience with such assessments, whether in-house programs or for-hire services.  Also, if you identify students needing writing help, in what format  do you offer it, e.g., non-credit or for-credit course, short intensive sessions, tutoring?

I'll be glad to compile and share all answers.  Please respond to listserv or contact me offline at Susan.Baker@morgan.edu

    Thank you.

I would like share my personal experiences as an international student in PhD program at HR.

    1. In the orientation season, all international graduate students 'must' participate the "English Writing Assessment" session.

    2. Department of Linguistics administers the writing assessment and notify the level of writing (Level 1, 2, 3, and 4).

    3. Level, 1, 2, 3 graduate students must take ESL writing courses (ESL 500, ESL 501, ESL 502). Personally, I got the level 3, and I just need to take ESL 501 and 502. More than 70% of international graduate students take ESL writing course(s).

    4. To be a Teaching Assistant, international graduate students must 'pass the Oral English Assessment' test too after passing the ESL writing courses.

    5. Personally, I took ESL 501, 502, 504 (intermediate verbal english), 506 (advanced verbal english), and 512 (writing research proposal).

    6. In total, I took at least one writing ESL course in a semester.

Those are all 'mandatory' and 'necessary' institutional requirements.

It was quite demanding, but it is highly rewarding. :)
