  • 3.  psychological distance scale

    Dear colleagues,

I'm looking for a survey scale for "psychological distance" (which comes from construal-level theory), and would be very grateful if you could let me know when you know of one.

    Many thanks in advance!

    Hi Bart,

As far as I know, there is not really a good scale for assessing psychological distance, apart from simply asking something like "how close or how far does X feel to you" (very close to very far). I have sometimes used the so-called 'Inclusion of other in self' (http://psycnet.apa.org/record/1993-03996-001), which works reasonably well but only for interpersonal distance.

    I hope this helps. Cheers,

    Gijs

    Bart,

A general psych distance scale does not exist (as far as I know) and may be difficult to develop given the dimensions on which distance may be based (interpersonal, spatial, etc.)A scale to assess "general" construal level may be useful in this regard. We developed a 3-item measure to measure daily construal level in a diary study (see below) and review alternative assessments (which were not suitable in our context). This may be of help.

    Hi Bart,
Apologies for the late response, but Dave Harrison, Luis Martins, and I have developed a 16-item psychological distance scale that we presented at AOM in 2016.  I will send you the scale in a separate email to see if it can work for your project.

If any other researchers are interested in the scale, please contact me at yuriannakimmons@gmail.com.
