Who is this leader who stands before me? Who am I, as a leader and a follower? Do my social identities, such as my race and gender, shape my opportunities to lead and the way that I lead? Despite a wealth of research on leadership-the processes through which individuals exert influence over other people's thoughts, feelings, and actions (Yukl, 2010)-much remains to be learned about the relationship between leadership and identity-the set of self-definitions that locate an individual in social space (Gecas, 1982). Some leadership theories, such as theory on charismatic/transformational leadership, recognize the importance of identity processes to leadership (Shamir, House, & Arthur, 1993), and numerous studies have demonstrated that leader effectiveness depends on follower identity (e.g., Liu, Zhu, & Yang, 2010; Paul, Costley, Howell, Dorfman, & Trafimow, 2001). Further, leader and follower identities are believed to have a strong impact on thoughts, feelings, motivation, and action (Day & Harrison, 2007; Gardner & Avolio, 1998). However, many important processes at the intersection of leadership and identity remain poorly understood, including the nature and consequences of leader identity, the implications for leadership of identity at multiple levels of analysis, the social construction of leader and follower identities, and the dynamics of leadership and identity in complex contexts such as multinational enterprises (DeRue, 2011; DeRue & Ashford, 2010; Johnson, Venus, Lanaj, Mao, & Chang, 2012). As a step toward addressing these important gaps, this symposium brings together a group of scholars whose cutting-edge theoretical and empirical work helps to deepen our understanding of core questions regarding the intersection of leadership and identity.
