Although individuals interact together in teams, several factors influence the meaning each of them derive from their team. Individual expectations and experiences determine the extent to which team members stay engaged and committed to the collective goal, resolve conflicts, are motivated to perform, and stay viable over time. Our symposium brings together five papers which examine the effects of divergent individual expectations and experiences in teams on individual and team outcomes. The current collection of papers contribute to research on individual cognition, diversity, goal-setting, and team identification; and has important implications for theory and practice on how to make teams more effective and meaningful.
