Work engagement is a critical concern for organizations and a generative area of inquiry for organizational scholarship. Each of the papers in this symposium presents a different approach to looking at engagement. The first paper, by Masakatsu Ono, examines the dynamic nature of work engagement-momentary work engagement-in its relationship with momentary demands and resources. The second paper, by Nancy Rothbard and Stephanie Wilk examines how engagement is perceived differently by supervisors and their subordinates and the consequence of this difference on job performance. The third paper, by Jeffrey Yip, Dayna Walker, Shannon Muhly Bendixen, and Michael Campbell, examines the phenomenon of relational engagement between leaders and their subordinates, and the consequences of relational engagement for executive performance and mentoring. The final paper, by Heejin Kim, Kathryn Doiron, and Maritza Salazar, presents findings from a construct and measurement development study on team engagement. The symposium will conclude with comments by Jim Harter from Gallup, who will comment across all four papers and discuss the practical implications of this research for organizations.
