Newcomer socialization is a key process in organizations, whereby newcomers transition from being an "outsider to integrated and effective insider" (Cooper-Thomas & Anderson, 2006, p. 492), and if successful, results in a range of beneficial outcomes for both individuals and the organization.
We are currently in the process of preparing a meta-analysis on newcomer socialization, its contributors and outcomes.Through meta-analysis and structural equation modelling, the aim is to synthesize and model the research, in particular focusing on the variables of:
Socialization tactics (e.g. Van Maanen & Schein, 1979, Jones, 1986)
Proactive behaviors (e.g. Ashford & Black, 1996; Morrison 1993)
Learning content (e.g. Chao et al., 1994; Taormina, 1994, Haueter et al., 2003)
Proximal socialization outcomes (e.g. task mastery, social integration, PO fit, role clarity)
Distal socialization outcomes (e.g. organizational commitment, job satisfaction, intent to quit, turnover, performance)
(for more on proximal and distal outcomes see Bauer et al., 2007; Saks & Ashforth, 1997; Saks et al., 2007).
We are writing to request unpublished data (i.e. correlations, means, sample sizes, and reliability estimates) between these variables. As we are using SEM to combine the meta-analyses, one study does not need to include all these variables to meet the criteria for inclusion.
If you have conducted a study on socialization that uses these variables and you think meets these criteria, can you please email Lisa Harris, School of Psychology, The University of Auckland (
lisa.harris@auckland.ac.nz).
To facilitate a timely submission of the manuscript, we are asking for all available unpublished data by July 15th, 2016.
Thank you very much with your assistance with this, it is much appreciated.
Best regards,
Lisa Harris
