  • 1.  Seeking unpublished effect sizes for perspective taking and empathic concern

    Posted 06-06-2016 12:18
    Dear Colleagues,

We are working on a meta-analytic summary of the effects of perspective taking and empathic concern in task contexts. As part of this project, we are looking for unpublished or forthcoming empirical manuscripts containing some effect size estimate (r, t, chi-square, z, d) involving:

    •  a focal actor's perspective taking, empathic concern, empathy, or sympathy

    AND

    •  some measure of the actor's attitudes or behavior directed to a target, jointly determined outcomes between actor and target (e.g., value capture, value creation, joint decision making), or the target's attitudes or behaviors

Such manuscripts may have been sent for review or presented at conferences. Either of these, along with papers in their development stages (but containing such zero-order effect size estimates or tests) would be helpful. If you have such recent unpublished or forthcoming papers, we would greatly appreciate receiving a copy sent to longmire.natalie@utexas.edu. In addition to our gratitude as colleagues, we would most certainly cite it in our summary work.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

A Harvard University study suggests that in colleges and universities, racism was prevalent in both overt and 'micro-aggression' forms, which includes subtle digs and biases (Caplan & Ford, 2014). Other studies have also suggested that racism in higher educational establishments can be covert (Brief, Dietz, Cohen, Pugh, & Vaslow, 2000; Dovidio & Gaertner, 2000). Some scholars also point out that decision-makers use social identity information to 'justify' their decisions as being seemingly objective ones (Norton, Vandello, & Darley, 2004). The purpose of this Professional Development Workshop (PDW) is to explore the more subtle forms of racism in higher educational establishments around the world (which are becoming more diverse in terms of students and faculty).

Using case study presentations as a format, followed by in-depth discussions, the issues to be raised in this PDW range from racism in personnel decisions to faculty behavior in the classroom, to racist jibes by students.
