Female Scholars in Leadership

Hi, In one of the courses I teach I have the students analyze several quotes from leadership scholar/researchers. I have been paying much more attention to the statement than the gender or ethnicity, and realize the quotes are all from males. Do any of you have favorite leadership quotes from published female or other ethnicities, who would be considered a scholar or researcher?

    Thanks.

Great point, Cathy - I will now pay more attention to this same issue in my own leadership class!

I don't have a specific quote, but perhaps there is something from Mary Uhl-Bien out there on Complexity Leadership Theory or Followership that could be of use? I'll be sure to keep my eyes peeled as I prep for the Spring semester and send anything else that comes up.

Great problem to get out there! Sheryl Sandberg and Mary Barra are a couple of my go-to female leaders and the Lean In Facebook page regularly has some great quotes for and about female leadership. Sandberg also works closely with Adam Grant (Give and Take) regarding issues exactly like this.

    Good luck!

If the question were regarding quotes from women leaders in general I
believe I could be more helpful, but women who study leadership is more
challenging. Anne-Marie Slaughter may fit the bill. Here are a couple of
    potential sources:

A couple of these might work as well - a few social scientists are included within:

    Hi Cathy.

Perhaps you can find something from Mary Parker Follett and/or Lillian Gilbreth (though I'm not overly familiar with their work). You may also consider reading the work of scholars such as Deanne den Hartog, Barbara Kellerman, and Alice Eagly. I'm sure you can extract quotes from their efforts.

N.B. - This is just a small sample...and the list is growing.

    All the best,

    Brian

Focusing on scholars/researchers might be narrow in approach- include
the practitioners as well. Practitioners may be from diverse fields
(business, public management, non-profit management, vocational, and
    so on).

    Dear Cathy,

I did also stumble over this lack of quotes and its really hard to find them. We searched for women's quotes to also include them in our seminar-brochure; however we found only one about leadership:

"Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person. " Mother Teresa

I would extremely appreciate, if you could share your potentially collected list of leadership-quotes then.

not about leadership, but some more:

"You have to have confidence in your ability, and then be tough enough to follow through." Eleanor Rosalynn Carter

"Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." Muriel Strode

"A lot of people are afraid to say what they want. That's why they don't get what they want."
    Madonna Louise Ciccone

"We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be attained. Marie Skłodowska-Curie

"Do one thing every day that scares you. " Anna Eleanor Roosevelt

"Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love." Mother Teresa

„How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world." Anne Frank

Focusing on scholars/researchers might be narrow in approach- include
the practitioners as well. Practitioners may be from diverse fields
(business, public management, non-profit management, vocational, and
    so on).

    Thanks,

Hi, In one of the courses I teach I have the students analyze several quotes
from leadership scholar/researchers. I have been paying much more attention
to the statement than the gender or ethnicity, and realize the quotes are
all from males. Do any of you have favorite leadership quotes from published
female or other ethnicities, who would be considered a scholar or
    researcher?

    Thanks.
