    Dear Colleagues,

I am looking for measurement scales or assessment tools that provide individual-level assessment of a manager's capability in leading change. It may include capabilities of embracing change for the manager in question (e.g., I guess Goal Orientation may fit here) and capabilities of influencing others to make organisational change successful.

Being familiar with Kotter's 8-step model for leading change, I would also highly appreciate any advices on other frameworks of specific leadership behaviours for leading change.

    Many thanks in advance!

    Best wishes,
    Yih-teen

    Yih-Teen,
With MBA students, I have successfully used a classic article by D. Rousseau (1996), Changing the Deal While Keeping the People, from the Academy of Management Executive. The central message is sound - the need to break the pre-existing psychological contract on what organizational members need to do strategically in order to keep the organization surviving. Rousseau describes the stages of changing employees' perceptions and the behaviors leaders should use to transition thinking to a new psychological contract. The stages and behaviors align well with other scholarly works on managing change. I'm attaching a pdf version of the article for your reference.

    Hello Yih-teen,

I hope this email finds you doing well.

One aspect of a manager's ability to successfully lead change is her ability to effectively communicate the need for a change and subsequently have her employees ready to embrace the change. In this regard,  Achilles Armenakis and Stan Harris' work on change readiness may be relevant:

    Armenakis, A. A., Harris, S. G., & Feild, H. S. (1999). Making change permanent: A model for institutionalizing change. In W. Pasmore and R. Woodman

(eds.) Research, in Organization Change and Development, Volume XII

(pp. 97-128). Greenwich, CT: JAI Press, Inc.

    Armenakis, A., Harris, S., & Mossholder, K. (1993). Creating readiness for organizational change. Human Relations, 46(3), 1-23.

Armenakis, A.A., et al. (2007). Organizational change recipients' beliefs scale: Development of an assessment instrument. Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, 43, 481-505.

    Cheers,

    Jeremy

    Dear Yih-teen,

Change management typically requires managers to be resourceful.   See:

    Kanungo, R. N. & Menon, S. T. (2005).  Managerial Resourcefulness: Measuring a Critical Component of Leadership Effectiveness.  Journal of Entrepreneurship, 14(1): 39-55.

The dimensions that make up managerial resourcefulness include Goal Directed Problem Orientation, Proactive Analytical Orientation, Problem Focused Perseverance, and Emotional Equanimity.
