Dear Colleagues:
We are proposing to organize a symposium on ‘Making Big Data and Analytics Meaningful for Organizations’ at the 2016 Academy of Management Meeting in Anaheim, California. The symposium builds on the one we organized at last year’s AoM in Vancouver on ‘The Quest for Management Research on Big Data and Analytics.’ We still have two spots for the proposal and are calling for colleagues to join us. A brief description of the proposal is presented below.
In the last decade, corporations have been using big data and analytics as a means to improve their decision making process and build new sources of competitive advantage (Davenport, 2006, 2010). However, the mere availability of data and analytics does not always help improve the decision making process or provide an impetus for moral and ethical decision making. The recent scandal at the German car maker, Volkswagen is illustrative in this regard. Hence, it is important for organizations to use big data and analytics as a means for providing a holistic benefit to their respective stakeholders, thereby making their experience meaningful. This symposium intends to explore the following questions. What is the purpose of using big data and analytics in organizations? How does the use of big data and analytics help organizations to better manage their resources and create meaningful work environments for their employees and stakeholders?
Colleagues interested in joining us should submit a 2-3 pages summary to Constant D. Beugré (
cbeugre@desu.edu) or Maggie Cheng (
chengm22@mcmaster.ca) by January 10, 2016.
