  • 1.  Contingency theories - suggestions for lecture materials

    Posted 11-24-2015 12:48

    Dear colleagues,

    I hope all is well.

I will be giving a lecture on Contingency theories to a final year undergraduate leadership module. Specifically, I'll be covering Fiedler's Contingency Theory, Path-Goal Theory (House) and Situational Leadership Model (Hersey & Blanchard).

I was wondering whether you have any suggestions for videos and group/pair activities that could be used to more vividly illustrate these theories to students.

    Thank you for your help.

    Kind regards,

    Ana

    Hi Ana,

My previous message got away from me before I could finish it. What I wanted to say if that I would not waste my students' time teaching or discussing theories which are obsolete, unless your topic is history of leadership theory. The theories you mentioned were developed under a business environment which was totally different to what businesses face today. Even Bob House back some 15 years ago told me in an informal conversation that his path goal theory should not be in the books anymore. If I have to teach your class, I would concentrate on business practices and events from the 1980's on! Well, here you have some videos that I had used in discussing, among other things, leadership in today's organizations!

    Thanks,
    Ivan

    Ana,

There are some group activities you might want to try to engage students.

    Numbered Heads Together

    • Students break into teams to pose questions to other teams.  Team 1 poses a question to Team 2.  Team 2 then puts heads together and makes sure all team members are confident in their answer.  Team 1 then chooses any member of Team 2 to answer the question.
    • Effective exam review technique that encourages students to think of potential exam questions and allows students to share their knowledge with other team members.

    Gallery Walk

    • Individually or in small groups, students rotate around the room, composing answers to questions posted at different stations and responding to answers already provided by other groups.  Students should be sure to rotate back to their original station to see how other groups responded to their initial answer or statement.
I enjoyed Numbered Heads Together in the teaching workshop where I got all these activity ideas and my students seemed to enjoy Gallery Walk after watching a video.

I have a quick question: how do you send email to the listerserv of OB? I have a question I'd like to have input on.

    Thanks,
    Cynthia
