    Hi Josephine, hi all,

Here is a fitting white paper I authored and that might be quite helpful for your purpose.
It is called "Heroes of Leadership" and it is freely available online:

I read this as part of my PhD program and enjoyed it:

It is much more about how business education and colleges have interacted with management thought than a book specifically about management thought.

I know that there has been a lot of debate on single and co authored papers. Does anyone have a document that lists the pros and cons of each option? I will appreciate a copy be sent to me.

    Hi Josephine,

You can refer the book by Daniel Wren titled "History of Management Thought".

Additionally there are useful videos available on The Industrial Revolution, Scientific Management, The Hawthorne experiments. If you have space you may wish to show the movie The Modern Times and follow it with a lively discussion on Industrialization and it's effects.

    Hope this helps.

The story of how the teaching of strategy has changed over the decades is fascinating and sheds important light on management theory and education in general. This article by Joseph Bower (title and abstract below) provides a useful account.

    The Teaching of Strategy

From General Manager to Analyst and Back Again?

Courses in strategy are an outgrowth of the business policy course first taught at Harvard Business School in 1912. This article examines how the teaching of a course concerned with the development and implementation of the goals and policies of a firm changed during three periods in the postwar period: first, with the introduction of the concept of corporate strategy; second, with the evolution of faculty interest in a concept of competitive strategy more closely grounded in industrial organization economics; and third, with the development of a new course in entrepreneurial management more closely linked to business policy's concerns with the general management challenges facing the leaders of modern firms. This history of the course is linked to changes in information technology, financial markets, and the managements of firms as well as related changes in the markets for students and faculty.

    Dear Josephine,
You might find a book that a friend and colleague of mine wrote a few years ago helpful. It is a hybrid that can be used in the classroom as well as by practitioners. Of course, the Wren references that were previously given are also wonderful guides for management history.
