Sustaining High-Quality Human Service Managerial and Organizational Scholarship:
A Facilitated Workshop Connecting Theory, Methodology, and Practice
Annual Conference of the Society for Social Work and Research (New Orleans)
http://sswr.org/2015-conference-home/
1/17/15 (Saturday), 10:00-11:45am
What is this workshop about?
This workshop builds on a 2014 workshop at the Society for Social Work and Research Annual Conference on human service managerial and organizational (M&O) scholarship to (a) assist doctoral students, early career investigators, and established scholars in incorporating appropriate theories and methodologies into their work and thus to (b) support the development of high-quality M&O scholarship. The workshop is also intended to create opportunities for human service M&O researchers to network, share resources, and develop new scholarly projects.
Consider attending the workshop if you . . .
Are interested in receiving feedback on your scholarship from workshop facilitators.
Are interested in learning practical strategies to strengthen the theoretical, methodological, and substantive dimensions of your work.
Want to network with others who have human service M&O interests.
Who will be facilitating the workshop?
Michael Austin (University of California-Berkeley) studies organizational and managerial practices that currently include qualitative case record data-mining, contractual relationships, knowledge sharing to support evidence-informed practice, and organizational change and innovation. His primary focus is on practice research and theory-informed practice.
Erick Guerrero (University of Southern California) focuses on the organizational context of disparities in access to care and the implementation of culturally responsive and evidence-based treatment practices in behavioral health services. Specific areas of expertise include using multilevel and mixed methods, testing client-centered outcomes, and informing leadership and organizational development interventions.
Karen Hopkins (University of Maryland) studies supervisory and management practices and outcomes, workforce development and retention, and capacity building. Specific areas of expertise include organizational/program development and evaluation, performance management and leadership, and "Standards of Excellence" certification.
Bowen McBeath (Portland State University) studies managers and nonprofit and public human service organizations in relation to political, economic, and social dynamics. His interests range from institutionalization and contracting to frontline practice and intervention development.
Jennifer Mosley (University of Chicago) studies the political role of human service organizations, specifically their involvement in advocacy, policy implementation, and collaborative governance. Areas of expertise include nonprofit advocacy, collaboration, public-private partnerships, and philanthropy.
John Tropman (University of Michigan) studies nonprofit management, contributory and servant leadership, the purposing of high-performing community benefit organizations, and processes for sustaining organizational inventions and innovations.
Everyone is welcome, but preregistration is encouraged (RSVP by 1/9/15 to mcbeath@pdx.edu).
If you intend to attend the workshop and would like to receive feedback from workshop facilitators on your scholarship/research during the group session, please email Bowen McBeath (mcbeath@pdx.edu) by January 9, 2015. Please include a short paragraph in which you (a) identify your general scholarly interests related to human service organizations and management and (b) summarize an in-progress piece of scholarship/research you would like to focus on during the workshop. This information will be used by the facilitators to organize small group discussions during the workshop.
