The Size of Organization Science: The Role of Practical Significance in Management Theory
Organizers: Matthew W. McCarter & Dina V. Krasikova - The University of Texas at San Antonio;
Discussant: James M. LeBreton - Penn State University;
Symposium Summary: Since its inception, organization science has been interested in understanding the practical significance that a theoretical finding has on organizational behavior. Practical significance is the idea of understanding the costs and benefits to an organization (and its members) for accepting the hypotheses of a theory to be correct. However, most organizational research published uses statistical significance as the criterion for gauging a finding's worth. The purpose of the current symposium is to bring the idea of practical significance back to the fore of organization science by discussing (1) what can go wrong when statistical significance eclipses all other criteria for publishing in organization science, (2) what has gone wrong in organization science regarding the ideas of statistical and practical significance, and (3) ways of improving the state of organization science when it comes to using the ideas of statistical and practical significance.
