Mentoring Graduate Students: Tips, Best Practices, and Life-Changing Stories from the Experts
(PDW #14095)
Academy of Management
August 1, 2014
The inaugural "Mentoring Graduate Students: Tips, Best Practices, and Life-Changing Stories from
the Experts will be held on Friday, August 1, 2014 from 12:30-2:30 pm at the Philadelphia
Marriott Downtown in Rooms 407, 408, 409 as part of the professional development workshops at
the Academy of Management meeting in Philadelphia.
The purpose of this workshop is to provide information, advice, and recommendations on
mentoring. The target audience is junior faculty or faculty making a transition to mentoring
graduate students. To do this, we will approach the topic by first presenting the scientific findings
of mentoring research and then presenting practical tips in mentoring by hosting a question and
answer panel, followed by round table discussions. We will also approach the topic from two
vantage points: 1) the faculty mentor and 2) the student mentee. To address these two vantage
points, the panelists include pairs of faculty mentor-student mentee who can speak to both the
role of faculty mentor and student mentee in the mentoring relationship. Our PDW provides both
scientific and practical information to faculty members to help them develop successful mentoring
relationships.
Our PDW will involve numerous accomplished faculty, including mentor-mentee dyads to facilitate
roundtable discussions with participants. The panel discussion includes Blake Ashforth, Jason
Colquitt, John Hollenbeck, Jeff LePine, Keith Murnighan, Sharon Parker and Connie Wanberg. These
faculty mentors will be joined by their former mentees, Eean Crawford, John Kammeyer-Mueller,
Madan Pillutla, Jessica Rodell, David Sluss and Jing Zhu, in taking questions from participants about
specific aspects of their mentor-mentee relationship. Also, Dr. Susan Murphy and Dr. Ellen Ensher
will present scientific research on mentoring as well. More information on the PDW can be found
