Scott,
Unless you are teaching an executive MBA class, I believe our students need first to be effective employees before they manage anything! By the way I am not so sure that any textbook has really been able to encapsulate what it takes to be a manager when we have such a great variety of industries, situations, levels in the organization, environments, etc. I would say that you could start by first checking your students against the list below (I use it once in a while even though it is from the 1990's):
The 21st Century Checklist
The Miami-Dade County Public Schools' Office of Instructional Leadership conducted a survey of businesses in the Miami-Dade County, Florida to identify what [. . .] graduates need to enter the 21st Century workplace. The list below is the result of the survey of the basic skills prospective employees must [should] possess, beyond the knowledge in functional areas of business.
1. Can independently read a variety of material.
2. Writes clearly, using appropriate grammar and structure.
3. Can solve and explain math problems.
4. Consistently process information and current events.
5. Regularly sets goals.
6. Considers risks and recognize consequences.
7. Takes responsibility for your own actions.
8. Knows how to learn new skills.
9. Works well in groups.
10. Handles feelings appropriately.
11. Reasons and make decisions to solve problems.
12. Understands and use scientific ideas and facts.
13. Shows creativity.
14. Listens regularly, and answer in appropriate language.
15. Works and plays safely.

Subject: [OB-LIST] Seeking Management Skills (Applied, Practical) text
Dear colleagues,
I am currently using the Cameron, Whetton textbook, "Developing Management Skills. Although it is a great textbook, I would like to find a text more focused on the practical application of management skills. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I would like to use this text for both graduate and undergraduate students.
Thanks, Scott
