The lab manager will coordinate the daily operations of the laboratories and data truck that serve over 50 faculty, Ph.D. students and research assistants at Carnegie Mellon University. The starting date for this position will be in July or August.
The current directors of the Center for Behavioral & Decision Research are Prof. Taya Cohen (Tepper School of Business), Prof. George Loewenstein (Department of Social & Decision Sciences), and Prof. Alessandro Acquisti (Heinz College of Public Policy).

CBDR LAB MANAGER
CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY
Coordinates the daily operations of the laboratories and data truck for the Center for Behavioral & Decision Research that serve over 50 faculty, Ph.D. students and research assistants. Develops and implements operating and administrative policies and procedures for the use and scheduling of the laboratories and data truck that comply with University and Department of Social & Decision Sciences policies and procedures. Advises laboratory and data truck users on experiment design, runs experiments, analyzes and interprets statistical data and communicates data in a clear, concise manner. Performs financial recordkeeping and schedules physical maintenance for the laboratories and data truck as needed. Maintains and grows subject pools, both offline and online. Oversees the summer internship program of the Center, including supervision of the interns' experiments.
CLASSIFICATION COMPONENTS
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:
Education/Training: Bachelor's degree in psychology, business administration, marketing, economics, behavioral decision-making, statistics, or econometrics; plus knowledge of scientific research methods.
Licenses: Current U.S. driver's license
Experience: At least 1 year of related research experience.
Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of experimental design and research protocols. Ability to collect and record data. Ability to manage multiple research projects in a timely and effective manner. (e.g., manage course credit and paid participant pool). Demonstrate advanced reasoning, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Excellent verbal and written communication, analytical, organizational, reasoning and problem solving skills.
Physical:
Mobility: Ability to stoop, reach, bend at waist, grasp, etc.; ability to lift and carry computers and lab furniture up to 25 pounds and stand for long periods of time.
Environmental Conditions: May be exposed to broken glass, plastic or metals.
Mental: Ability to pay close attention to detail, meet inflexible deadlines, remain calm during difficult situations, work under pressure and work with frequent interruptions.
Other: Must have access to an insured, registered, and inspected automobile. Weekend and evening hours may be required.
Preferred Qualifications and Requirements:
Education/Training: Master degree in related field or equivalent in experience and education; plus knowledge of scientific research methods.
Licenses: Current U.S. driver's license
Experience: 2-4 years of related research experience.
Skills/Abilities: In addition to the minimum skills/abilities, good knowledge of computers and IT-environments would be a big plus. Knowledge of experimental software (e.g., Eprime, DirectRT, Qualtrics, MATLAB, SPSS, EXCEL, SAS) and of design/handling of webpages (e.g,. HTML).
Accountability: Expected to determine own priorities. Develops and implements operating and administrative policies and procedures for the use and scheduling of the laboratories and data truck. Contributes to the design of experiments and research protocols under the overall supervision of the faculty members of the Center for Behavioral Decision Research.
Direction: Daily operations of the laboratories and data truck are performed under minimal supervision with only end results of work being checked. Only complex problems or issues with experiment design and research protocols are referred to principal investigators or the Steering Committee of the Center for Behavioral Decision Research. Only the most difficult or unique administrative situations are discussed with the business manager of the Department of Social & Decision Sciences.
Decisions: Scheduling of experiments, maintenance of experimental computers and other laboratory equipment, management of research assistants.
Supervision: Supervises experiments of summer interns
CLASSIFICATION FUNCTIONS OR RESPONSIBILITIES
- SUPERVISION OF EXPERIMENTS AND USAGE OF LABORATORIES AND DATA TRUCK. Scheduling and execution of experiments including reserving and handling access to facilities; Checks that IRB approvals have been obtained for experiments. Monitoring and reporting on usage; Recruiting participants; Managing participant databases; Management of the Research Participation Program of CBDR; Designing experiments and research protocols with PI; Responding to daily emails to CBDR from researchers and participants (60%)
- MAINTENANCE OF LABORATORIES AND DATA TRUCK. Maintenance of lab computers includes making sure all software is up to date, hardware is functioning, new software is installed; Maintenance of laboratory space includes making sure the laboratory rooms are regularly cleaned, lights work, furniture is intact; Maintenance of the data truck includes purchasing and filling with gasoline, renewing auto insurance, completing annual vehicle inspections, ensuring satellite internet access, getting parking permits from the Pittsburgh Parking authority, ensuring all data truck computers work, scheduling and transporting the driver, scheduling and organization of repairs (25%)
- SUMMER INTERNSHIPS. Plan and supervise CBDR summer intern program (10%).
- OTHER. Maintenance of the CBDR websites; Search for research funding opportunities CBDR members (5%)
