    Dear colleagues

I am looking for a scale measuring perceptions of organizational structural characteristics, especially centralization and formalization dimensions.

I would really appreciate your help!

    Many thanks in advance.

    Olga

The Aston/LBS studies have the gold standard in these scales.

Also the Ferry and Van den Ven book

    Hi Olga,

Patterson, M.G., West, M.A., Shackleton, V.J., Dawson, J.F., Lawthom, R., Maitlis, S., Robinson, D.L., & Wallace, A.M. (2005).  Validating the organizational climate measure:  links to managerial practices, productivity, and innovation.  Journal of Organizational Behavior, 26, 379 – 408.

    Formalization

It is considered extremely important here to follow the rules

People can ignore formal procedures and rules if it helps get the job done

Everything has to be done by the book

It is not necessary to follow procedures to the letter around here

Nobody gets too upset if people break the rules around here

They don't have a specific centralization measure, but some of the other measures might be close enough?

    Cheers,

    Jeremy

    Dear Olga –

You might check out Schminke et al. (2000, p. 298) and references therein. Also, for a more recent study using the items found in Schminke et al., you can see Walter and Bruch (2010).

    Dear Olga,
if the structure of an organisation and its processes, which you want to consider, are similar to that of the article cited below this e-mail, then you may take a look at the Webpage of the OCT-Project [Organisational Coherence and Trajectory Project  http://www.octresearch.net] and contact the project administrator (Daniel Dauber, Warwick University). He might give you access to the Normative Personality Instrument [NPI] which is a tested questionnaire and covers the following constructs:
    1. market-based view
    2. resource-based view
    3. legitimization management
    4. level of formality in internal communication
    5. level of external communication
    6. clarity of strategy
    7. preference for adjustment processes
    8. single-loop learning
    9. double-loop learning
    10. level of formalization
    11. flexibility
    12. hierarchy of authority
    13. level of market dynamism
    14. level of market complexity
    15. level of action orientation
    16. loyalty
    Best wishes
