LONDON BUSINESS SCHOOL EUROPEAN PHD WORKSHOP

The London Business School is holding a research workshop for a select group of graduate students enrolled in European PhD programmes May 29-30, 2014.  The workshop will focus on generating innovative research projects on social psychological processes within organisations.  Areas of focus will include ethics, power, and groups and teams. The aim is to discuss 'unsolved' problems or questions in these areas and generate ideas to examine them. For example, sample questions that may be considered within these areas include:

    ·         Why do good people do bad things? How do individuals maintain a positive self-image despite acting in unethical ways?

    ·         How can we create organisations that foster ethical behaviour? How should organisations prevent or respond to unethical behaviour?

    ·         How does social class influence our psychology (cognitions, emotions, behaviours) across our lifespan?

    ·         How does social hierarchy affect our ability to form and maintain relationships with those around us?

    ·         How do individual team members' varied reactions/experiences within the team influence individual and group outcomes (e.g., the effects of conflict asymmetry)?

    ·         How can we broaden our theoretical perspective on group diversity beyond information processing and social categorisation processes (e.g. consider the dynamic processes that unfold within diverse groups)?

    The workshop will include:

    ·         Short talks by LBS faculty on the key questions in each of the areas.

    ·         Breakout sessions in small groups, guided by faculty, to brainstorm ideas for studies to tackle these questions.

    ·         Group presentations of potential research ideas in plenary with other participants.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together bright, motivated PhD students with similar interests so they may inform and benefit from each other's line of research, in a collaborative environment. We envisage this workshop will help participants generate additional questions or projects they may wish to explore, either individually or in collaboration with other participants from the workshop.

We ask current doctoral students working on ethics, power, and teams/groups to send us a short research statement (approximately 150 words) telling us about a current research project(s) on one of these topics (please feel free to include the relevant working/published paper) as well as a CV. Please send us your application to europhdworkshop@london.edu by 14th March 2014. For questions regarding this workshop, contact Ana Almeida on aalmeida@london.edu or 020 7000 8910.

Selected participants will have their travel, food and hotel paid for by the London Business School.
