    Dear colleagues,

I am developing a course on People Management and I'd like to talk about the Pygmalion effect and the self-fulfilling prophecy. Can you recommend any exercise, role play, simulation or case study on these topics?

Thanks a lot for your help.

    Dear Marcello

I have my students watch this video of Jane Elliott and it does exceptionally well in class as a foundation for robust discussions and debates. It deals with stereotyping, self-fulfilling prophecy and is very powerful stuff; some strong language but I'm an Aussie so it does not bother me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MYHBrJIIFU

It also in some ways relates to the Pygmalion effect, although there is a good HBR article on the Pygmalion effect you might like to use as well by J. Sterling Livingston).

    Cheers.

    Marcello:
There is a Creativity exercise that I do with my students that is often used as a demonstration of goal-setting. However, it can also demonstrate the impact of expectations and how expectations can create SFPs. I included it in the CRM Learning training guide I wrote on the Pygmalion Effect a number of years ago to introduce/demonstrate these concepts. It demonstrates how higher expectations can lead to higher performance.

I have attached two documents that might be useful in doing this.
