Social network analysis has transformed the study of organizations and has firmly established itself as a major research paradigm across a variety of disciplines. Scholars utilizing a network perspective see the organization as a structured nexus of relationships and study the antecedents, consequences, and evolution of such relationships at multiple levels of analysis.  As the popularity of social network research increases, scholarship is evolving in many directions including new theory and applications on network dynamics, multiplexity, digital networks, instrumental and affective ties, and cross-cultural considerations, in addition to methodological advances in data collection, analyzing network cognition, ego-network data, and statistical models of tie churn and network evolution.

The LINKS Center for Social Network Analysis at the University of Kentucky presents this compendium of essays from leaders in the field addressing contemporary issues in organizational social networks and proposing new theories, applications, and associated methods. The volume provides a wealth of ideas and directions for future research in the field.  Although the focus of the collection is largely on social networks in organizational research, these papers cover theory, methods and applications that have rich implications for scholars studying social networks in a wide variety of disciplines.
