    Hi Ashwini,

See paper below by Bakker & Sanz-Vergel (2013) who have developed a measure of challenge and hindrance demands.

Bakker, A. B., & Sanz-Vergel, A. I. (2013). Weekly Work engagement and Flourishing: The Role of Hindrance and Challenge Job Demands. Journal of Vocational Behavior.

Also, check out Arnold Bakker's website for other research papers on hindrance and challenge demands.

    Hope this is useful.

We employed a measure from  Cavanaugh et al. (2000) in a project where my co-authors conducted the survey:

    Cavanaugh, M. A., Boswell, W. R., Roehling, M. V., & Boudreau, J. W. (2000). An empirical examination of self-reported work stress among US managers. Journal of Applied Psychology, 85(1), 65.

    Dear Ashwini,
I used my own three item measure of challenge appraisal in this paper:

Ohly, S., & Fritz, C. 2010. Work characteristics, challenge appraisal, creativity and proactive behavior: A multi-level study. Journal of Organizational Behavior, 31: 543-565.

However, there is also a validated instrument that you might want to look at:

Gaab, J., Rohleder, N., Nater, U., & Ehlert, U. 2005. Psychological determinants of the cortisol stress response: the role of anticipatory cognitive appraisal. Psychoneuroendocrinology, 30(6): 599-610.

    Dear Ashwini,

We used a combination of well-estblished scales to tap into job hindrances and job challenges in the following paper. You can find the paper by clicking on the reference.

    Dear Ashwini,

My coauthors and I measured challenge and hindrance stressors in a forthcoming paper and provided all items in the methods section. You can download it from the Academy website.
