Take a look at my new book, The 'I' of Leadership: Strategies for seeing, being and doing (Jossey-Bass) – the analysis, especially about the technique of "decentering", is relevant to understanding self-other boss-subordinate relationships.

Does anyone besides me find it sad that OB/HR can offer no evidence-based and applicable knowledge on such a common organizational issue?

Yes Mike I find it sad too : (  -  but on the other hand "how to manage your boss" is very vague.  A bit like if you asked for information about "how to manage people" or "how to create world peace".  As in all these situations one needs to find more specific questions or problems or challenges then perhaps (and only perhaps) some evidence-based knowledge can be identified and applied.

    Cheers

No need to be sad, guys.  There is a significant cache of evidence on this topic.  Perhaps because Ricardo asked for practitioner-oriented literature those familiar with the considerable research on upward influence in organizations didn't weigh in.  Also note the literature on issue selling and bottom-up change.
