Despite the progress that the field has made on interpersonal trust in organizations, the extant research is limited in its focus on only one party within a dyadic relationship and on only one work relationship and referent at a time. In this symposium, we showcase emerging research that can expand our knowledge of interpersonal trust by adopting a more nuanced approach, one that considers both parties in a dyadic relationship (i.e. a bi-lateral approach) and that acknowledges that individuals have trust relationships with multiple referents (e.g., a multi-foci approach). They address issues including interpersonal and intrapersonal predictors of trust, the consequences of trust asymmetry, and trust across referents and cultures. With these studies and the discussion, this symposium aims to help generate the next wave of research to offer novel insights into the complexities of interpersonal trust.
