  • 1.  Leadership Assessment and Development Course

    Posted 04-22-2013 13:44

    Hi everyone:

I am developing a course on leadership assessment and development and wondered if anyone has any suggested resources that they can recommend. The intent of the course is twofold - (1) assessment of leadership skills and their development in self and others (2) strategies for career development.

    Thanks,

    Ethlyn Williams

Hello Ethlyn, you could check out an Edward Elgar book, Self-management and leadership development, (Rothstein & Burke, Eds.)

    Hi Ethlyn,

You might find my forthcoming (June, 2013) book, Effective Leadership, useful. Here is the link that will let you order your review copy:

The book gives considerable attention to leadership assessment and development. Every chapter has a self-assessment for students on the textbook website. The first chapter focus on leadership development and mentoring. In addition, the free online course pack, The Leader's Bookcase, also includes a great chapter by David Day on leadership development. The textbook has three chapters on personality traits to help with selection (see the chapter titles in my signature box), and a chapter on self-leadership. I also cover the work on leader skill development by Mike Mumford and his colleagues in the chapter on cognitive intelligence and complex task performance. Leader development and career development are themes that run throughout the book, and the chapters on authentic leadership and on identity theory in particular cover how people adopt their leadership role and develop their leadership identities.

I know that in these tough economic times that many students have trouble affording textbooks, so I picked a publisher (SAGE) that prices its books fairly. The book is priced in the $51.00 to $60.00 price range (with free shipping) on the various websites (Barnes&Noble.com, Amazon.com, Sage). Given that it comes with a free online course pack and expensive layout feature (like photos of leaders covered in the cases) this is a great price for a comprehensive research based textbook.

    Take care,

    Ron
