The German Journal of Research in Human Resource Management is the highest ranked German journal covering research on all issues related to Human Resource Management (HRM) and is listed by the SSCI. The Special Issues published in English receive considerable attention both in Germany and across Europe. This Special Issue is dedicated to Health Promotion.
Health Promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. What is the role of leadership in this process? Recent research suggests that leadership is an important determinant of various indicators of employee well-being, including sickness absences, general health, and satisfaction (Kuoppala, Lamminpaa, Liira, & Vainio, 2008). Further, there is also evidence that the health of employees can be promoted through specific leader behaviors and leadership styles (Haslam Reicher & Platow, 2011; Skakon, Nielsen, Borg, & Guzman, 2010). However, the extent to which leadership may influence employee health and the processes that underlie this effect are not well researched and understood at present. With the aim of filling this gap in the literature, the German Journal of Human Resource Research is pleased to announce a Special Issue on "Health Promotion through Leadership".
We encourage submissions of papers that explore the relationship between leadership and employee health as well as mediators and moderators of this relationship. We especially encourage submissions that:
-provide a better theoretical/conceptual understanding of why and how leadership behavior in organizations promotes (or harms) health of employees;
-empirically elucidate the development of new instruments to assess health- promoting leadership;
-discuss the basic implications of the "power of leaders" for promoting health in organizations;
-explore the antecedents and moderating variables of health promoting leadership across different levels of the organization and across different cultures;
-clarify the role of empowerment, task demands, self-management skills or proactivity of employees in this process;
-examine the health of leaders as an antecedent or consequence of health promoting leadership and potential spillover processes.
Papers should deal with these issues in a powerful and compelling way, contributing to international leadership research. The above list is by no means exhaustive, and other papers are of course welcome and encouraged by the Guest Editors if leadership and health are central variables. While we welcome both empirical and purely conceptual manuscripts, we particularly encourage the submission of empirical papers.
Submissions
In order to be considered for publication in the Special Issue, a proposal of 1500-1800 words (a figure and/or table can be added) should be submitted by July 31st, 2013. The authors will receive feedback and a final decision by December 31st, 2013. Finalized papers are due by March 31st, 2014. Submitted papers must be unpublished and not submitted to other journals.
