Managerial Agility and Innovation: Managing Change - Announcement of a conference and PhD summer school
Summer Conference, June 30th and July 1st, 2013
PhD Summer School, June 30th through July 10th, 2013
At the Arison School of Business, IDC Herzliya, Israel
Topic: Change has always been a central element in management, yet there is growing evidence that recently its role has gained even more dominance – that the changes are both more frequent and more fundamental. Managers and businesses operate in a turbulent, unstable, and uncertain environment that may call for flexible and innovative managing. This new environment has significant consequences for the strategic planning of business, the structure of organizations, the style of management and the emotional and cognitive state of managers and workers.
Although “managerial agility and innovation” isn’t yet an established research subject, related topics have received considerable attention. These include: curiosity, creativity, and innovation; resistance to change; organizational structure; strategic planning and leadership; and proactive and reactive management.
In order to stimulate research of these specific topics and the broader topic of “managerial agility and innovation” Arison School of Business will hold a series of annual events on the subject, including a summer conference and a PhD summer school, starting in the summer of 2013. Both events will take place at the Herzliya campus at IDC.
Presenters: Among the participants are the following: Ap Dijksterhuis (Radboud University); Ido Erev (Technion and IDC); Ayelet Fishbach (University of Chicago); Craig Fox (UCLA); Adam Galinsky (Columbia University); Uri Gneezy (UCSD); Tory Higgins (Columbia University); Aaron Kay (Duke University); Michael Morris (Columbia University); Yaacov Trope (NYU and IDC) and Wendy Wood (USC).
The Conference: The two conference days will include research activity in rich formats – including theme talks, presentations of specific research articles and brainstorming discussions – in order to identify new research questions relating to the conference topic. A video clip showing various participators suggesting new questions, in the presentations, discussions, and brainstorming sessions, will be edited in a TED format and distributed online in an effort to stimulate research and discussion into these issues. The PhD summer school: Its mission is to provide rigorous and high quality training for doctoral and post doctoral students in selected areas of the behavioral science that bear on change and innovation. The school is lead by Tory Higgins, Adam Galinsky, Yaacov Trope and Ido Erev and will involve in-depth studies of the concepts and methods in the selected field. The participants, individually or in small teams, would prepare and present a research proposal on the topic of the seminar. The school will be open to fifteen students selected on the basis of their qualifications and background. For more information and to apply to the summer school, please visit our webpage at
