  • 1.  Undergrad OB/HR Course

    Posted 02-02-2013 20:04

    Hello,

I am in the process of re-designing 2 courses in our curriculum. Instead of having a year-long combined OB/HR course, we are moving to presenting this material in only one semester. Does anyone have a syllabus / suggestions they would be willing to share on an undergrad course covering both OB/HR in one semester?

    Thank you in advance,

    Claudia

    Dear Claudia

I deliver a hybrid HRM-OB course on a one year business conversion programme, titled a Higher Diploma in Business. However, it is run on a full academic year cycle, rather than on a  semester basis.  I can send you the subject guide and syllabus under separate e-mail cover if you or any other members think it may be of any help.

If so, please get back to me directly at  pauric.orourke@lit.ie

    Claudia,

At the risk of sounding like I am promoting my own book, let me tell you what I did-which thus far has worked very well for my students at the undergraduate, MBA, and executive MBA levels. I used material that spans the OB and HR domains rather than having one book on OB and another one on HR. Specifically, I used the following book on performance management, which relies on both OB and HR theories and practices (e.g., motivation, leadership, compensation, team processes, communication, leadership, training, feedback, etc.):

Aguinis, H. (2013). Performance management, 3rd edition. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Prentice Hall.

This books comes with PowerPoint files, realistic cases that can be used for in-class discussion or as take-home assignments, test banks, etc., which make preparation quite easy. Feel free to order a free examination copy at: http://www.pearsonhighered.com/educator/product/Performance-Management-3E/9780132556385.page

The additional benefit of following this approach is that many students have negative views and stereotypes of labels such as "human resources management." By using the label "performance management," which all managers must do well, I was able to create a positive attitude toward the course from day 1.

    I hope this helps!

    Regards,

    --Herman.

We redesigned our HR and OB courses to be a single, full-credit course that is delivered in one semester.  We used a textbook that integrates resources from other books.  The syllabus is available at

    Dear Claudia,

Thank you for sharing your challenge with us.  Before making any suggestions, it would help to know who the students are in this course and how the learning outcomes are intended to serve them.

Specifically, will it be required for all cadets or only those studying behavioral science or management?

If the former, it seems that combat officers, most of whom will have to make life-and-death decisions in their work, will be better served by a course more heavily weighted on the OB side, especially with an emphasis on the psychological side of OB rather than the managerial side.   I suspect that, given her academic training, General Born would respect such an approach.

    Best regards,

    Jason Pierce
