    Dear Colleagues,

Our campus is interested in developing a foundational course for a minor program (Undergraduate) in Women and Gender Studies. The committee would like to build the curriculum around 7 to 10 common texts, appropriately augmented and/or interpreted by the faculty member teaching any particular section.

The burning question is, If you could suggest any one (or two) texts that address central issues of women and gender studies as it pertains (within a business curriculum), what would that be?

Happy to compile the list and repost if there is interest!

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I've used "Gender and Sexuality in the Workplace" by C. Williams and K. Dellinger in a Social Issues in the Workplace course.  Not sure if it is common or not, but it covers a broad spectrum of issues and is a recent publication.
    Hope that helps.

    Dear Kelly,

I would like to encourage you to add Entrepreneurship to your curriculum.  Besides being a potential career goal for all students, entrepreneurship is even more relevant for women, who start their own businesses as a career strategy to in response to the glass ceiling and to provide flexibility for family development.

My research with John Watson shows that women-led businesses are as successful as male businesses when evaluated on the basis of return on assets, not just equity.  This is more equitable because men borrow more, increasing their risk.

One book I can recommend is:

Global Women's Entrepreneurship Research: Diverse Settings, Questions and Approaches. Edited by Karen D. Hughes and Jennifer E. Jennings.2012  Northampton, MA: Edgar Elgar.

While this may not be the best book for your purposes I hope you consider my suggestion to add Entrepreneurship to your program.  If I can be of any further assistance please let me know.

    Kindest regards,
    Roxanne

    Kelly,
Here's a message from one of my economics colleagues:
A good textbook is "The Economics of Women, Men, and Work", 6th edition, by Francine D. Blau, Marianne A. Ferber, and Anne E. Winkler.  It has some basic economic concepts in it but given in such a way that a student with no previous background in economics can understand it.

    Good luck with your request!
