This special issue aims to advance understanding and expertise in the design, implementation and evaluation of resource-oriented interventions in the workplace. Resources are defined as “objects, personal characteristics, conditions, or energies that are valued by the individual or that serve as a means for attainment of these objects, personal characteristics, conditions, or energies” (Hobfoll, 1989; p. 516). We are particularly interested in interventions that target psychological resources promoting well-being, health and/or performance at work, which include (but are not limited to):

    · Personal resources, including dispositional optimism (Carver & Scheier, 1998), psychological capital (Luthans, Avolio, Avey & Norman, 2007), regulatory resources (Muraven, Tice & Baumeister, 1998), and self-efficacy (Bandura, 1997).

    · Social resources, including emotional support (DeLongis, Folkman & Lazarus, 1988) and interpersonal capitalization (Ilies, Keeney & Scott, 2011).

    · Job resources including social support from colleagues and the supervisor, autonomy and task variety, (Bakker & Demerouti, 2007; Schaufeli & Bakker, 2004) and resources derived from the physical features of the work environment (Vischer, 2007).

Psychological interventions pose challenges in terms of design and evaluation, as we are often attempting to capture elusive concepts such as behavior change or small effects on emotions or cognitions. We are interested in papers that advance both methodological approaches to studying resource-oriented interventions and original empirical contributions that represent innovative interventions. In particular, we are interested in submissions that address boundary conditions for effective interventions (see Lyubomirsky & Layous, 2013), or discuss additional ways to measure intervention effectiveness (e.g. physiological measures, objective organizational data, such as absenteeism rates, peer-ratings). When considering boundary conditions of intervention effectiveness, questions such as the following are raised:

    · What resources are the optimal ones to fuel in such interventions?

    · Are there specific population groups (i.e. vulnerable groups, high stress groups) who benefit the most from specific interventions?

    · How long should intervention activities be, and how frequently should they be performed in order to have sustainable effects? What are appropriate time frames for capturing these effects? Under what conditions are different interventions beneficial?

    · Going forward, how can current research and evaluation designs be improved upon to capture psychological changes that occur as a result of these interventions?

    · Are there optimal designs for such interventions in order to capture the expected changes in these psychological resources?

We welcome submissions that address innovations in methods-focused approaches to the design and evaluation of interventions, as well as exemplars of interventions that use innovative evaluation approaches.
