    Dear Colleagues,

I am looking for a classroom activity that would help to increase student awareness of selective perception.  Any recommendations?

    Thank you for your time.

    Dear Mark,
You may consider a video based activity using  "eye of the beholder". The video is quite effective.

    Mark,

I project a photograph that has many complex elements for about 30 seconds in class. Students have 5 minutes to write down what they remember. They invariably notice different things, and we discuss why those differences occur. Provided that the photo is sufficiently complex, many of the differences will be explicable by selective perception.

    I hope this helps.

I use the following clip below. Of course, the video starts by saying "this is a test of selective attention" and I cut beyond that so students are not aware that they have to pay *extra* attention. But, it's really useful in providing the point and they find it funny.

    Hi Mark,

I discuss a case of a large infrastructure projects conglomerate that decides to enter the business of making and selling ready mix cement in order to better utilize its idle equipment in the environment where construction activity is booming. Due to perceptual selectivity, the senior managers commit a series of errors in judgment through bias and heuristics. As can be expected, the operation is wound up in just about three years after launch.

Initially the students attribute the failure to external causes, but when they begin to see the selectivity at play, they realize how subtle yet powerful it can be. And then I show them some simple examples of selectivity using visuals where the three lines of an almost-triangular figure do not meet to form angles, then I complete the triangle and write "Swtich off the the engine" - the kind that you find in texts such as Fred Luthans, and that winds up the class pretty lightheartedly.

The case study I mentioned, "Arco Limited: Launch and Closure of a Ready Mix Cement Plant"  is available at the Asian Case Research journal at http://www.worldscientific.com/toc/acrj/13/02

    I hope it helps.
    Best,

    Dear Colleagues,

I am looking for a classroom activity that would help to increase student awareness of selective perception.  Any recommendations?

    Thank you for your time.

Simons invisible gorilla book also has a number of cool practical examples of selective attention. I particularly like the one where two eye witnesses witness the same crime and remember it very differently even within hours of the crime.

I use the following clip below. Of course, the video starts by saying "this is a test of selective attention" and I cut beyond that so students are not aware that they have to pay *extra* attention. But, it's really useful in providing the point and they find it funny.

    Hope it is useful.

    Colleagues,

Something I do sometimes is to tell students of the situation where one starts to notice very often an object which has probably been there all the time but that we never "saw" before. Example, when  a friend or relative buys a new car we then start to see that car model everywhere! It was always there but it was not significant to us until after our relative/friend bought one of them.  Then I ask them to think about similar situations (share and explain them) where they started to notice an object, etc., more as a result of similar circumstances.

    Hope this helps!

    Thanks,

    Ivan
