    Greetings!

I have a couple of honors undergraduate students who will be doing some observational research for the first time. I'd love to give them some basic references for ethnographic research and qualititative methods. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Sincerely,
    Lois

    Hi Lois,
I've attached a couple syllabi of courses that I was fortunate to take as a doctoral student.
I also recommend looking up qualitative publications in their field's top journals, and seeing who they cite within their Methods sections (to see what the norms are, or what reviewers will expect or ask for).
Hope that things are going well for you up in Northridge!
    Cheers,
    Dana

    Hi,

    This is a great book:

    Participant Observation
    - Spradley

This is also a great book:

Basics of Qualitative Research: Techniques and Procedures for Developing Grounded Theory
    -Corbin and Strauss

    Of course I rather like:

Narrative Methods for Organizational & Communication Research
    -Boje

    Hope that helps,
    -Rohny

I'd recommend the following.  It is oriented towards undergraduate research with examples of ethnographic studies students have conducted.

McCurdy, David W., Spradley, J.P., and Shandy, D.J.  The Cultural Experience: Ethnography in a Complex Society.  Long Grove, Ill., Waveland Press, 2005.
