This workshop unites two communities of scholars in the area of team innovation research. The first group (Weingart, Bunderson, Joshi) representing the 'science of teams' includes scholars representing a significant tradition of social science research on the effects of team inputs such as composition, size, and structure on team processes such as behavioral integration, conflict, and communication, and team outcomes such as performance and innovation. The second group of 'science in teams' scholars (DeChurch, Contractor, Uzzi, Cummings and Switanek) represents a relatively nascent and exciting line of inquiry. This group of scholars has focused specifically on scientific teams that are assembled to solve complex scientific problems (e.g., early detection of cancer, developing an HIV vaccine, mapping the human genome) that require the integration of expertise across multiple disciplines. Both groups are united by the recognition that innovation can be primarily understood as a collective phenomenon.
The workshop will be organized into two sections.
Research Presentations (4-5.45 p.m.): In the first section presenters will discuss their current research, identify theoretical and methodological overlap between the two groups, and outline directions for future research.
Research Incubator Round Tables (5.45 – 7 p.m.): Participants will break into research incubator round tables that allow panelists to interact with session participants, discuss ideas for future research, and provide guidance on ongoing research.
